Boya was founded in 2019 by Nyoongar entrepreneur Gerard Matera.  Starting out in the energy market in partnership with Perth Energy, Gerry was quick to see the imperative as a traditional owner of showing leadership in the energy transition, so he switched Boya Energy’s focus to renewables.

With the global energy transition in mind, Gerry invited Ron Villaflor to join the board.  Ron has vast experience in the energy and mining sector and worked in native title in the Pilbara for fifteen years.

Taking on the energy transition means paying close attention to whether the details match the vision.  In 2021, eminent Western Australian climate scientist Dr Bill Hare joined the Boya Energy board along with WA Climate Leaders founder, interviewer and facilitator Meri Fatin.

The Boya Electrical team is headed up by Toni Kfouri and Michael Lourey, both bringing significant industry experience to the table and driving change.

As a passionate advocate for Aboriginal and LGBTQI+ community affairs, Gerry has founded a number of successful Aboriginal-owned businesses in the renewable energy, construction, food and security sectors.

Seeing the imperative as a Nyoongar traditional owner of showing leadership in the energy transition, Gerry moved Boya Energy’s focus to renewables early in the company’s life.

Gerry Matera says participation in renewable energy projects aligns strongly with the values and vision of Boya.

“We are committed to fast tracking the energy transition, creating opportunities for Aboriginal people and businesses while preserving country. Production of green hydrogen is a key component of that story.
